Dawand Jones is making positive strides in his recovery from the knee injury that ended his season. He remains on schedule with his rehabilitation and is optimistic about returning soon. Here’s the latest update on Jones as the OTA’s approach.
Dawand Jones embarked on an unconventional journey to secure a starting position with the Cleveland Browns during his rookie year. Selected in the fourth round of the 2023 draft from Ohio State, Jones initially served as a backup offensive tackle for the Browns. Despite this, he quickly made an impact by playing in 712 snaps, conceding only three sacks and incurring just two penalties.
Jones’s opportunity arose early in the Browns’ season when starting right tackle Jack Conklin sustained a season-ending knee injury during their first game against the Bengals. Jones stepped up admirably, finishing the game strongly and earning his first career start the following week against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Reflecting on his unexpected rise, Jones remarked, “I remained composed while waiting for my chance, knowing that my moment would eventually come.” He went on to start the subsequent seven games, providing stability on the offensive line’s right side. Although sidelined for the Browns’ ninth-week matchup against the Cardinals due to a shoulder injury, he returned for Week 10 against the Steelers and continued to start in Weeks 11 and 12.
However, Jones encountered a setback on December 7, 2023, just before the Browns’ week 14 game against the Jaguars, when he suffered a knee injury in practice. Subsequently, he underwent season-ending surgery to repair his medial collateral ligament and meniscus cartilage, concluding an impressive rookie campaign.
Currently in the recovery phase, Jones expressed optimism about his progress, stating, “Rehabilitation is progressing well, and I’m pleased with my recovery three months post-surgery.” While he is expected to miss Organized Team Activities starting in April, he aims to return to full health by the end of July for training camp.
Looking ahead, Jones anticipates a competitive battle to reclaim his starting position on the offensive line, considering the return of Jedrick Wills Jr. and Jack Conklin from season-ending injuries. Nevertheless, he remains focused on the present and his journey to recovery, emphasizing the importance of staying committed to daily improvement.
As the Browns gear up for the upcoming season, Jones is excited about the addition of impactful players such as wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, acquired via trade from the Denver Broncos, and the re-signing of defensive end Za’Darius Smith. Forming a close bond with Smith, Jones eagerly anticipates the opportunity to compete against him in practice and continue his development.
Entering a pivotal year, Jones aims to solidify his place within the franchise and demonstrate his long-term potential as an offensive tackle. With his determined attitude and commitment to progress, he appears poised to make a significant impact in the Browns’ 2024 campaign.
