Premier League side Brentford will host Sheffield Wednesday tonight, as the Owls look to pull off a Carabao Cup upset. Danny Röhl, Sheffield Wednesday’s manager, has carefully considered his team selection for this high-stakes match. As recently as Friday, Röhl admitted to still debating whether to implement significant changes across the squad or to limit adjustments to a few key positions. So far this season, he’s used cup matches to rotate his squad extensively, giving opportunities to fringe players. This approach has proven successful, with wins over teams from each tier of the EFL, including Hull City, Grimsby Town, and Blackpool. However, tonight’s opponent, Brentford, represents a step up as a Premier League side and will likely pose the Owls’ toughest challenge yet. Although Brentford may also shuffle their lineup, their squad depth, bolstered by three years of Premier League resources, will be a formidable factor.
Röhl must also consider the demanding Championship fixture schedule ahead, including the highly anticipated Sheffield derby on November 10. Sheffield Wednesday faces additional strain with the recent injuries to Akin Famewo and Olaf Kobacki, who join Michael Ihiekwe and Nathaniel Chalobah on the injury list. Conscious of the risk of fatigue, especially with a crucial run of fixtures, Röhl weighed his options following their comeback win at Portsmouth last Friday. He suggested that some players, like Shea Charles, might benefit from rest. Ultimately, Röhl is eyeing a memorable progression to the quarter-finals, though he’s mindful of balancing ambition with squad management.
In an interview with *The Star*, Röhl expressed his mixed feelings, saying, “I must say, I am really a bit between. On the one hand, I am really looking forward to such a game because we worked now to get to the fourth round, and it is a great opportunity. We deserve it. We have been very professional in the cup so far, but of course, it means another midweek game. Then there is Saturday, Tuesday, and maybe the biggest game of the year. We know this.” Acknowledging the tough series of upcoming fixtures against top-eight teams, Röhl remains optimistic, saying, “We will take the cup game, we will try, we will be prepared, and maybe we can step into the next round. Why not?”
