Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is preemptively laying out excuses ahead of Newcastle United’s upcoming visit on Wednesday.

Crystal Palace welcomes Newcastle United to Selhurst Park for a Premier League clash on Wednesday evening. The match kicks off at 8pm, with no live coverage available on UK TV.

Heading into Wednesday’s match, Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace squad is riding high on the momentum of their first consecutive victories of the season, both of which were notably impressive performances.

Their winning streak commenced with a narrow 1-0 triumph over title-contenders Liverpool, followed by a resounding 5-2 dismantling of West Ham on Sunday. The latter match was particularly noteworthy, as Palace’s dominance was so evident that Dean Henderson, West Ham’s goalkeeper, conceded a goal to them in the 89th minute seemingly out of sympathy for the scoreline.

Interestingly, the outcome of Sunday’s match worked in favor of Newcastle, as West Ham’s defeat hindered their pursuit of the Magpies in the league standings. With West Ham now trailing Newcastle by two points and having played two more games, they find themselves at a significant disadvantage in the race for European qualification.

Glasner is of the opinion that Newcastle holds the upper hand.

“The players demonstrated exceptional performance in the opening 30 minutes, which was truly delightful for a manager to witness. It was a superb display, but now the match is concluded. We’ve secured the three points, marking our first consecutive wins of the season.

“Our next aim is to make it three in a row against Newcastle, which poses a significant challenge. They will be well-rested, so we might face a similar scenario as we did with West Ham today, where fatigue could be a factor due to midweek fixtures. While we draw many positives from today’s game, it’s crucial to remain focused for the upcoming challenges.”

Newcastle has an impressive recent track record against Palace.

Newcastle may boast fresher legs, yet our squad remains significantly depleted, with notable absences. However, the Magpies hold a psychological advantage due to their recent successful record against Palace.

According to The Chronicle, Crystal Palace has failed to score against Newcastle in 514 minutes of play. Coupled with their recent achievement of back-to-back wins for the first time this season, the likelihood of a third victory seems improbable.

While we refrain from sounding overly confident, history suggests that Eddie Howe’s side stands a strong chance of securing three points in this encounter.
