Confirmed: Stoke-on-Trent lands new £20m levelling up boost

Levelling Up Funds to Transform Burslem Market and Chatterley Whitfield in Stoke-on-Trent

Burslem Indoor Market and Chatterley Whitfield are set to receive significant enhancements through Stoke-on-Trent’s share of the £20 million Levelling Up Partnership funding. Stoke-on-Trent was selected as one of 20 areas to participate in the government’s Levelling Up Partnerships initiative, which offers a portion of a £400 million fund to boost regional development.

City council leaders and the government have agreed on the allocation of these funds, with nearly £6.5 million earmarked for the renovation of historic buildings and £2.5 million dedicated to enhancing recreational facilities. This includes the creation of a new ‘wellbeing campus’ in Burslem in collaboration with Port Vale.

Part of the funding will be used to restore the Grade II-listed Burslem Indoor Market, aiming to rejuvenate this deteriorating landmark. Additionally, Chatterley Whitfield, another heritage site at risk, will benefit from a ‘green growth strategy.’ This initiative aligns with the Levelling Up Partnerships announced by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in March 2023. Stoke-on-Trent City Council had been eagerly awaiting confirmation of their funding allocation ahead of the general election.

A city council spokesperson expressed relief over the timely approval, highlighting the urgency and persistence of council officers in securing the decision. With the funding confirmed, the council is poised to rapidly implement the projects. The designed programme promises widespread benefits across the city, catering to various age groups and interests.

The initiative focuses on revitalizing town centres, including Tunstall, Longton, and Stoke, by improving public spaces and addressing anti-social behavior. Collaboration with Port Vale will enhance leisure facilities in Burslem, and the Burslem campus of Stoke-on-Trent College will see the establishment of a new Green Skills centre, benefiting both young people and adults. The restoration of Burslem Market and the green growth strategy for Chatterley Whitfield will proceed in partnership with local businesses. Furthermore, a new city centre plan will be developed, complementing other projects under the city’s new corporate strategy aimed at improving overall wellbeing.

All Levelling Up Partnership projects will undergo a business case evaluation to ensure their feasibility and effectiveness.
