Cleator Moor Celtic have upper hand in derby with Whitehaven

Cleator Moor Celtic won 3-0 in the local derby against Whitehaven in the West Lancashire League.
Jay Weatherill gave them the lead after 15 minutes and the same player doubled the lead five minutes before half time. The win came in 15 minutes when Luke Close scored the third from the penalty spot.

It was a welcome first win of the season against White haven for Celtic as the visitors had won their previous two meetings this season.

Celtic manager Stuart Shaw said: “After Whitehaven’s two defeats, a third was unthinkable from our point of view. “The players have come in, listened and delivered and then they can go and enjoy their Christmas and New Year. I’m very proud of them all.

“I know from watching and watching Whitehaven that they can be dangerous and it’s a credit to their coaches that they have a good group of lads who want to play the right way.

“But this time we didn’t allow that and our intensity and quality as a unit prevented them from gaining momentum in the game. “Everything we worked for and talked about was done and getting a clean sheet was an added bonus.

Whitehaven manager Jon Karl Benson said: “The better team won the day and I have no complaints. They wanted it more and were much better.”
