Chelsea in financial trouble amid Aston Villa and Conor Gallagher transfer news

Don Goodman calls it “madness” for Chelsea to consider selling Conor Gallagher to Aston Villa unless they’re in serious financial trouble.

The Telegraph reported on 18 May that Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is out of contract in a year. Despite his contract situation, Chelsea are reportedly asking for around £50 million for Gallagher to comply with PSR guidelines.

Don Goodman expressed surprise that Chelsea would consider offloading the England international, acknowledging that financial needs might necessitate such a move.

“You don’t get to be part of an England squad at a major tournament unless you’re a very good player, which Conor Gallagher is,” Goodman told Villa News.

He noted that talk of Gallagher leaving isn’t new, as similar discussions occurred last year. Goodman emphasized Gallagher’s consistent performance, second only to Cole Palmer at Chelsea last season.

He argued that selling Gallagher would indicate serious financial trouble for Chelsea, otherwise it would be “madness.

” He added, “If you’re Aston Villa and have the chance of getting hold of Conor Gallagher, why wouldn’t you?”

From Aston Villa’s perspective, acquiring Conor Gallagher could make sense. Like Chelsea, Villa must sell players before bringing in new ones. The potential sale of Douglas Luiz could facilitate Gallagher’s purchase, even though it might upset fans. The £50 million fee for Gallagher seems high given his contract expires in a year, but reducing it to £40 million could be a smart move as Gallagher is a proven Premier League player.

This summer, clubs need to be smart with their finances while making quality additions. If Gallagher becomes one of Villa’s marquee signings, it could be a solid piece of business, especially if Luiz leaves.
