Celtics Guard’s Breakout Season Turns Heads, Catches Joe Mazzulla’s Eye

Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard expressed disappointment with his performance in Tuesday’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks, particularly with the lack of energy he brought on both ends of the floor. However, Pritchard quickly turned things around the following night.

On Wednesday, Pritchard delivered a standout performance in Brooklyn, helping the Celtics secure a commanding 139-114 victory over the Nets at Barclays Center. While he continued his usual sharpshooting, draining five 3-pointers and finishing with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting in 36 minutes off the bench, his contributions extended far beyond scoring. Pritchard also posted eight assists, six rebounds, two steals, and even a block, showcasing his all-around impact on the game.

This impressive performance has certainly caught the attention of Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, who praised Pritchard for his two-way play. Mazzulla highlighted the guard’s ability to create pressure on defense, including deflections and steals, as well as his versatility on offense. Pritchard’s effectiveness in the pick-and-roll and ability to play both on and off the ball has made him a key player for the Celtics. Mazzulla noted that Pritchard is currently playing at a high level, which has been a joy to watch.

Pritchard’s strong performances have not only impressed his coach but also his teammates. Jaylen Brown has acknowledged Pritchard’s growing importance to the team, even suggesting that at times the Celtics should let him “run the show.” Pritchard, who is averaging a career-high 15.7 points per game while shooting 41.7% from beyond the arc, has shown he is more than capable of taking on a major role, especially when filling in for Derrick White, who dealt with foul trouble during the first half against the Nets. Brown praised Pritchard for his consistent excellence, calling him a “superstar in his role,” and emphasized that his high-level play is now expected.
