Celtic are contemplating re-signing Stuart Armstrong following his unexpected release from Southampton at the season’s end.
In the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke disclosed that Stuart Armstrong, now 32, has surfaced as a potential target for Celtic, the reigning Scottish champions. Armstrong is firmly on their radar as they contemplate bolstering their squad.
Nevertheless, sources indicate that Brendan Rodgers is seeking significant financial support in the transfer market to ensure his team can make a strong impact in European competitions. Consequently, the club will initially explore other options besides Armstrong, focusing on younger players who can develop and thrive at Parkhead.
Finance expert Kieran Maguire informed Football Insider that Celtic’s budget has been significantly boosted by their Champions League qualification. This financial windfall provides the club with more flexibility in the transfer market.
Celtic are considering a deal to bring Stuart Armstrong back from Southampton. Armstrong, who left Southampton at the end of the season, is now available on a free transfer, paving the way for a potential return to Celtic after six years. The midfielder initially joined the English side for £7 million in 2018 and made 214 appearances for the club across the Premier League and Championship.
In the recently concluded season, Armstrong played 45 games, scoring six goals and providing seven assists, contributing significantly to Southampton’s promotion back to the Premier League. During his previous stint at Parkhead, Armstrong participated in both the Champions League and Europa League, and helped Celtic secure four SPFL titles, two Scottish Cups, and two Scottish League Cups.
Armstrong’s winning pedigree, European experience, and established rapport with the fans make a return to Celtic a compelling possibility this summer. Alongside Armstrong, sources have revealed to Football Insider that Celtic are also considering bringing back Kieran Tierney, who is reportedly eager to return to Parkhead.
