Everton will be paying £22million to secure the services of Lyon defender Jake O’Brien, according to Sky Sports.
The news outlet reported on 27 July that the Toffees have struck an agreement with the Ligue 1 side for the 23-year-old.
It was initially understood that £15.2million would be enough for the Republic of Ireland international, according to Foot Mercato while the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath stated that it would be £16.9million.
Everton to spend big to sign Jake O’Brien
The Toffees might be paying more than what was initially expected but they are securing the services of a talented young defender.
O’Brien is still only 23 and would add good depth to the defence, especially as Sean Dyche would be looking to try out different systems.
He can also give James Tarkowski a much-needed breather every now and then and if the Irishman plays well, he might even be a regular starter.
The Lyon defender would undoubtedly complement Jarrad Branthwaite well in defence and hopefully strengthen the organisation of the side.
It remains to be seen if there are any snags in this deal as there certainly will be clubs keen on signing him.
This should also not stop the club’s summer activity as they still need to rope in more new signings.
