BREAKING: Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Former Baltimore Ravens Veteran Starter Before 2024 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers are bolstering their secondary by acquiring a former starter from their division rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, as part of their ongoing efforts to enhance depth.

In a strategic move aimed at managing their salary cap, the Steelers released defensive backs Keanu Neal and Patrick Peterson before the onset of free agency.

While they secured Donte Jackson for the secondary by trading Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers in March, the team remains focused on further strengthening the unit ahead of the upcoming season.

Reports from Pro Football Talk reveal that the Steelers recently inked a deal with defensive back Anthony Averett on Sunday.

Averett, who participated in the Steelers’ rookie minicamp over the weekend on a trial basis, has impressed the coaching staff sufficiently to earn an extended stay with the team.

His agent, Chad Wiestling, confirmed to PFT that the Steelers have signed Averett to a one-year contract following his workout sessions with the squad.

Averett’s recent football journey saw stints with the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions during the previous season, albeit without any regular-season appearances.

Drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Averett remained with the team until the end of the 2021 season.

Despite being 29 years old, he boasts a substantial NFL career, having started in 27 games and appeared in 51, accumulating 114 total tackles, 23 passes defensed, and three interceptions along the way.
