To fill his position as defensive coordinator, Jerod Mayo is considering more than simply outside applicants.
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS, DeMarcus Covington, the current defensive line coach, will also be interviewed for the position. After joining the Patriots in 2017, the 34-year-old was given his own position group two years later. In 2019, Covington started working with outside linebackers, and since 2020, he has been the defensive line coach.
Mayo claimed to have gained a lot of knowledge from working with Covington in the previous season.
Mayo remarked in 2022, “Coach Covington, he’s taught me a lot.” He has risen through the ranks and experienced everything from dealing with cards to managing a room. He is one of those men who truly makes an effort to win over the players’ hearts, minds, and souls. I believe he’s respected by all the men.
He is well-versed in both offensive and defensive ball play, having played both positions. unquestionably a valuable asset to this club.
Covington played collegiate football for Samford, an FCS institution in Alabama, as a wide receiver before entering the coaching field.
Covington is well-liked inside Gillette Stadium and has been listed as one of NFL Network’s “Future Coaches To Watch” for two consecutive seasons. During the previous offseason, he also attended interviews to be a defensive coordinator for the Chargers and Cardinals.
In addition to Michael Hodges of the Saints, Christian Parker of the Broncos, and Tem Lukabu of the Panthers, Mayo is apparently interviewing all four candidates for the position of defensive coordinator in New England, with Covington being the fourth one.
