This week, after just one season, offensive coordinator Brian Johnson was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles, who are drastically altering their coaching staff this summer. They began interviewing possible replacements on Tuesday. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that Kliff Kingsbury, the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, was interviewed by the Eagles for the position.
Kingsbury worked for USC as a senior offensive analyst during the 2023 season.
Before being let go after the 2022 season, he had led the Arizona Cardinals for four seasons, from 2019 to 2022, amassing a 28-37-1 record.
Kingsbury has already interviewed for the offensive coordinator job with the Chicago Bears, and he is reportedly set to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Despite his struggles as a head coach in the NCAA and NFL (he also had a losing record at Texas Tech), he is still thought to have a strong offensive mind, and an NFL coordinator position might be a good fit for him. Numerous coaches in NFL history were excellent coordinators but failed to gain complete command of a club and achieve success.
In terms of total yards and points scored, the Eagles’ offense was rated eighth at the end of the season. Although most teams would be thrilled to have a season like that, quarterback Jalen Hurts took a tremendous step backward and the squad as a whole saw a considerable dip from the 2022 season. Down the stretch, the Eagles likewise suffered a severe decline. winning just one of their final six games, including a postseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
They have already moved on from both of their top assistant coaches and in search of new offensive and defensive coordinators. It seems likely that head coach Nick Sirianni will return.
