All of the marks out of 10 for Leeds United in Germany after their pre-season friendly with Schalke on Saturday afternoon as Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe score the goals in a 2-0 win
Leeds United (4-2-3-1)
1 Illan Meslier
Stood up well to a decent one-on-one effort when Schalke got in behind, but distribution was found wanting at times, particularly in two examples when passing out to Jayden Bogle. 6
2 Jayden Bogle
Excellent first start in Leeds colours. Completely dominated his battle with Anton Donkor in both directions. A real asset in the final third and provided another assist for Mateo Joseph. Timed his challenges really well and offers a reliable option. Looks a classy addition. 8
14 Joe Rodon
Not quite as eye-catching as Bogle and did commit one lapse in the second half, but he recovered from that incident and generally looked a step ahead all afternoon. 7
39 Max Wober
Abandoned the backline to press a Schalke striker, which exposed the defence to a good opportunity for the natives. Picked up a yellow for a strong challenge, but was generally decent in defence, always offering an option to team-mates and battled well with opponents. 6
3 Junior Firpo
Didn’t quite get the looks at attack he would have liked. Could be heard bellowing for the ball in space, but didn’t always get played in as he wanted. No dramas in defence, won his battles, just didn’t get the chance to shine for a higher mark. 6
4 Ethan Ampadu (c)
A combative performance from the skipper. Committed three or four fouls in a highly fractious midfield battle. Vocal as usual. Not quite the influence he would want on the game. One memorable dribble into the box caught the eye. 6
8 Joe Rothwell
Stayed under the radar in the main, but did catch the eye in moments with his passing and drives from deep. Could be a slow-burner who gets better as he gets more and more minutes under his belt. Impressive curling pass found Bogle before the first goal. 7
29 Wilfried Gnonto
A good afternoon for the Italian. Involved in most of the good stuff Leeds put together and had more than one look at goal he should have scored with. 7
24 Georginio Rutter
A little slow to get going, but once he unlocked the cheat code he was at his purring best. Produced chances in the first half, but saved his best for after the break. Schalke could barely lay a glove on him and the gorgeous assist for Joel Piroe was one of many superb deliveries in the final third. 8
11 Brenden Aaronson
Presented with a beautiful opportunity by Rutter in the first half. He ghosted in for a one-on-one on the angle, but his effort was tame. Kept battling and grafting, but drifted in and out of the match without a huge impact. 6
19 Mateo Joseph
Keeps the show on the road. Not always involved in the thick of the action, but stayed alert and waiting in the box for when the ball fell his way. When it did he either tested the goalkeeper, or scored. So confident. 7
Substitutes
21 Alex Cairns
26 Karl Darlow (on for Meslier h/t)
Not asked to do a whole lot, even less than was put Meslier’s way in the first half. Stood tall and caught what needed to be caught. 6
5 Pascal Struijk (on for Wober h/t)
As Leeds grew in control of the game, there was less and less for the second-half skipper to do. Nothing of note came his way. 6
7 Joel Piroe (on for Aaronson 57min)
Kept on top of the battle with Joseph and scored a lovely striker’s goal of his own at the back stick. Showed some good pace and got in behind for a second decent opportunity too. Link-up play catching the eye. 7
25 Sam Byram (on for Firpo h/t)
Really, really impressive turn from the substitute. Came on at the break, but found the pace of the game straight away. Won most of his his battles and nicks possession so well in the opposition half for Leeds attacks. 8
30 Joe Gelhardt (on for Joseph 72min)
Chances still aren’t quite sitting up for him. Remains committed to the cause and plays a part in build-up, but his looks at goal are so often charged down or smothered. 6
44 Ilia Gruev (on for Ampadu h/t)
Another strong showing from today’s bench. Picked out multiple decent passes from deep which got Leeds on the attack. Always good with his tackling. Going to be a good battle if it is him versus Ampadu next season. 7
50 Charlie Crew (on for Rutter 72min)
Game became quite bitty in the latter stages and the Wales international was not seen on the ball too much. 6
51 James Debayo (on for Bogle 72min)
Steady. Ticked things over. Nothing too good or bad that caught the eye as the match faded out. 6
56 Luca Thomas (on for Gnonto 84min)
