Chelsea have left Alfie Gilchrist out of their pre-season squad amid links with Leeds United, Preston, Sheffield United and Blackburn, according to Ben Jacobs.
The Give Me Sport journalist reported on 22 July that Leeds have already made an enquiry into signing him on loan this summer.
However, it’s understood that the likely destinations for the 20-year-old right-back are Sheffield United and Preston.
Jacobs wrote on X: “Alfie Gilchrist is not with Chelsea’s travelling tour to America. Gilchrist is part of a loan group kept in England with a view to finding a new club in the coming weeks. Championship the most likely destination, as previously revealed.”
“Understand Preston or Sheffield United are the two most likely loan destinations for Gilchrist as of now. Leeds and Blackburn the other Championship club to enquire earlier in the window.”
Leeds United must act quickly to emerge as favourites to sign Aflie Gilchrist
The Whites need to touch base with Gilchrist’s representatives to emerge as favourites for his signature.
Gilchrist’s potential arrival at Elland Road could provide much-needed depth and quality in the right-back position.
His experience in top-flight football, albeit limited, could be invaluable for the Whites.
Moreover, his versatility, as he can also play as a centre-back, adds another layer to his appeal.
Leeds must present a compelling case to Gilchrist, highlighting their project, the potential for regular playing time, and the opportunity to develop under their coaching staff.
Their ability to offer a clear pathway to first-team Premier League Football could be a decisive factor in this transfer battle.
Gilchrist, at 20, is at a crucial stage in his career, and the promise of consistent minutes could sway his decision in Leeds’ favour.
The club’s history of nurturing young talents and their ambition to return to the Premier League could also be attractive propositions for the Chelsea player.
In other Leeds United news, a claim has emerged over a new Elland Road transfer as the Whites eye a move to sign an international defender.
