Despite having multiple offseason interviews, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is still unemployed as the Atlanta Falcons signed Raheem Morris.
In 2021, Belichick was awarded a Sports Emmy for his work as an analyst on NFL Network’s “NFL 100 All-Time Team” series, which gives him some TV experience as well.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, that leaves Belichick with one or two options: either sit out the 2024 season or accept a position in television.
In addition, he would surely be one of the most in-demand voices in sports media. He has 38 years of coaching experience, 29 of which were as a head coach.
Other Super Bowl-winning head coaches have taken time off in the past as well before landing new jobs.
Sean Payton, Mike McCarthy, and Doug Pederson, the former head coaches of the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, and Philadelphia Eagles, all had a season off before being brought on (or, in Payton’s case, traded to) by their current teams.
Belichick is more accomplished than all three of those coaches combined, but is a bit older and also could demand control of the 53-man roster, a responsibility which he held in New England.
Before he makes a possible comeback to the NFL sidelines, Belichick’s work in television may also provide him with a better understanding of how other teams function.
The Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders are the only two teams still in need of a head coach, but Belichick does not seem to be a candidate for either position
