AC Milan faced a disappointing Sunday evening, trailing 13 points behind Serie A leaders Inter, despite holding onto their third position, still seven points ahead of Atalanta in fifth.
The setback came in the form of a frustrating 1-1 draw with Atalanta at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, where an early lead slipped through their fingers.
Rafael Leao provided a glimmer of hope with a stunning goal within the first three minutes. The winger showcased his skill by navigating past two defenders and delivering a curled strike into the far corner of Marco Carnesecchi’s goal.
However, AC Milan’s advantage was short-lived as Atalanta leveled the score with a controversial penalty awarded after a high boot from Olivier Giroud. Teun Koopmeiners capitalized on the spot kick, marking his 10th goal of the season.
The first half lacked notable action until Atalanta’s penalty claim stirred controversy. Referee Daniele Orsato, following VAR consultation, pointed to the spot.
Milan struggled to regain momentum in the second half but had several opportunities to secure a victory in the closing stages.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic both missed chances, and with ten minutes left, Davide Zappacosta thwarted Olivier Giroud’s attempt for a winner by heading the ball off the line.
The outcome leaves AC Milan with a considerable gap from the league leaders, emphasizing the challenges they face in maintaining their competitive edge in Serie A.
