Everton could receive a significant financial boost if Anthony Gordon transfers from Newcastle United to Liverpool.
Cash-strapped Everton could receive a significant financial windfall if their former winger, Anthony Gordon, made a surprising move to join Liverpool from Newcastle United.
Everton’s ownership situation remains unresolved eight months after Farhad Moshiri agreed to sell his 94.1% stake to 777 Partners. The Miami-based investment firm has struggled to finalize the deal, prompting Moshiri to meet with Everton’s Fan Advisory Board next week to address financial concerns. In his program notes for the final home game against Sheffield United, director of football Kevin Thelwell acknowledged the club’s tight financial constraints, stating, “Given the regulations in place and the club’s current financial position, we have to trade well. Players will be sold.”
It’s been over 22 years since a player last transferred directly between Everton and Liverpool when Abel Xavier moved to Anfield. Since then, Everton has taken ex-Reds Sander Westerveld and Conor Coady on loan, and in 2021, Moshiri controversially appointed former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. Anthony Gordon, who recently became Newcastle United’s Player of the Year and shone at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, has caught Liverpool’s eye. According to the Daily Star, Liverpool’s scouts are impressed with Gordon’s consistent performance on the wing and are considering him as a summer target, with a hefty offer of around £100 million likely needed to tempt Newcastle.
Gordon’s departure from Everton in last year’s January transfer window was contentious. Everton’s terse 59-word statement confirmed his move to Newcastle for an undisclosed fee, with no thank you or good luck messages. Despite this, Everton has a sell-on clause for Gordon, meaning they stand to gain financially if he completes a big-money move to Liverpool or another club.
