The England U21 international, however, ran out of time at Old Trafford and moved to Lille on a free transfer in August 2020, turning down offers from Arsenal as well.
Since then, Gomes has developed into a true midfield maestro in France under Paulo Fonseca, dominating in a No. 6 role and across multiple positions as he moves up and down the field.
Elanga, who signed a £15 million deal to join Nottingham Forest after leaving Manchester United himself in July, has now designated the Lille No. 8 as he the most underestimated colleague.
The Swedish international said, “He’s really very good.” People must have watched him at England’s victory-filled U21 Euros, as he displayed his incredible skills as a number six, eight, and 10.
Gomes has had another fantastic season for Lille thus far, making 35 appearances in all competitions, tallying two goals and dishing out seven assists.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and others at Old Trafford were reportedly hopeful that the 23-year-old would sign a new contract that Manchester United put on the table.
Gomes, according to Sky Sports, felt that the “numbers did not add up” and chose to relocate to France in order to take on a new challenge in his career.
The Londoner’s choice has clearly paid off, although Manchester United will be sorry to have lost such a talented midfield player. nothing – a player that emulates Kobbie Mainoo’s style of gameplay.
