Analyst Reveals Why The Patriots Drafted Drake Maye

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots opted not to entertain any potential trade offers and instead chose to use their third overall pick to select North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye. This decision positions Maye as the prospective franchise savior and the anticipated leader in the post-Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era.

Despite pre-draft speculation, the selection of Maye with the third overall pick was not a certainty. However, one analyst, John Middlekauff, provided insights into the Patriots’ decision-making process. According to Middlekauff, the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings expressed interest in Maye, which influenced the Patriots’ choice to remain at the third spot. The respect for Giants head coach Brian Daboll and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, both known for their offensive acumen, played a significant role in the decision. Given Daboll’s history with Josh Allen in Buffalo and O’Connell’s success in Minnesota, it seemed prudent for the Patriots to secure Maye rather than risk losing him to either team.

Maye’s playing style has drawn comparisons to Josh Allen due to his athleticism and strong arm. Compared to Mac Jones, Maye offers additional attributes that appeal to NFL teams.

During the offseason, the Patriots traded Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars and brought in Jacoby Brissett, a respected veteran quarterback, through free agency.
