Amon: “I think we’re really predictable to each other”

Hawthorn defender Karl Amon attributes the Hawks’ stunning mid-season turnaround to implementing a more predictable brand of football. In his second year with the club, Amon has played all 14 games for the brown and gold in 2024, averaging 23 disposals and 557.6 meters gained per game with an 82.4% disposal efficiency.

Speaking to ABC Sport Sunday, Amon discussed the team’s mentality as they approach the bye with a balanced record of seven wins and seven losses after a challenging start of 0-5. He highlighted the importance of a simplified game style and even contributions from the entire team.

Amon stated, “The coaches have simplified our game plan really well, focusing on pressure and predictability. As a young group, keeping things straightforward makes it easier to follow.” He emphasized that the players have embraced this approach, leading to a more predictable and exciting brand of football.

Amon also noted the team’s progress in relying less on individual brilliance and more on collective effort. “We don’t expect players like Sicily, Newcombe, and Day to dominate every week. We focus on everyone playing their role, which contributes significantly to our success.”

Looking forward to the club’s five-day break, Amon mentioned the importance of a mental refresh. “After the game on Saturday, the coaches organized a quick debrief with our line groups. Now we can enjoy five days off, switch off from footy, and do whatever we want.”

He added that while some players might travel, many are staying to play golf in Tasmania. Amon stressed the group’s hunger and ambition to play finals football. “Each year, you strive to play in September. We’re no different, but we know we need to keep playing predictable and consistent football to achieve that.”

Acknowledging the tough run ahead, Amon concluded, “We need to put ourselves in the best position to make finals. It’s going to be challenging, but the group is certainly up for it.”
