Kristaps Porzingis declined to miss Game 5 due to an uncommon injury.

After suffering a rare lower leg injury late in Game 2, Kristaps Porzingis missed Game 3 and dressed but didn’t play in Game 4. He returned off the bench in Game 5, though he wasn’t as dominant as in Game 1 when he energized the team with his comeback from a previous calf injury. Playing just over 16 minutes, he contributed 5 points and provided relief for Al Horford in the Celtics’ 106-88 win over the Mavericks, securing their 18th championship banner.

Despite his reduced mobility due to the injury, Porzingis’ effort and contribution were significant. He told ESPN that the injury would require surgery but credited adrenaline and the support of the fans for getting him through the game. Porzingis had a sleeve on his leg and emerged with ice after halftime but played effectively enough to make an impact.

Porzingis expressed his determination to help the Celtics win a championship, even after suffering a torn medial retinaculum and a dislocated posterior tibialis tendon in his left leg. He thanked the medical staff and fans for their support and was thrilled to be part of the championship victory.

His teammates and coach praised his dedication and perseverance. Derrick White highlighted Porzingis’ value as a teammate and competitor, while Coach Joe Mazzulla noted Porzingis’ hard work to get back into the game despite not being fully healthy. Porzingis’ performance in the first two games, where he averaged 16 points, five rebounds, and 2.5 blocks, showcased his importance to the team both offensively and defensively. Despite playing in pain, his presence on the court was invaluable.
