In a tense Sunday afternoon match, Southampton edged out Leeds United 1-0 in the Championship Play-Off final, securing their return to the Premier League.
According to an exclusive report by the Telegraph, Russell Martin’s newly-promoted Southampton side might see a familiar face return this summer. Adam Lallana, soon to be a free agent, was spotted at Wembley Stadium sitting next to Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier, watching the Championship Play-Off final unfold.
At 36, Lallana is set to leave Brighton and Hove Albion in a month’s time, making him free to negotiate with any club. This potential fairytale storyline could see the Southampton academy graduate return to his boyhood club, bolstering their bid for Premier League survival.
Martin is keen on adding experienced players to his midfield, especially with uncertainty surrounding Flynn Downes’ future. Downes, who struggled to adapt to the Premier League pace during his loan spell from West Ham United, could greatly benefit from Lallana’s expertise should the latter return.
Reports indicate that preliminary talks have already taken place, hinting at a possible pre-contract agreement between the clubs. If finalized, the former Champions League and Premier League winner with Liverpool could become Southampton’s first marquee signing of the season.
During his previous spell with Southampton from November 2007 to June 2014, Lallana made 250 appearances and scored 59 goals from midfield. He played a key role as the team climbed through three divisions before moving to Liverpool in July 2014. At Liverpool, the former England international made 178 appearances, contributing significantly to several cup-winning seasons.
In his recent stint at Brighton, Lallana made 104 appearances, mainly coming off the bench and providing coaching support. However, a return to St. Mary’s could see him play a crucial role in Southampton’s fight against relegation.
Writer’s View:
Even at an older age, Lallana could experience a career revival similar to Ross Barkley if he returns to his boyhood club. The Saints desperately need experience, and Lallana, even in a player-coach capacity, brings undeniable quality. With Downes as a potential key player, along with Joe Aribo and Will Smallbone’s impressive performances, Southampton could have a solid midfield next season. However, additional key signings will be necessary to compete with the ever-increasing quality in the Premier League.
