After extending Enda Stevens’ contract, Steven Schumacher acknowledged the left-back’s impact both on and off the field. After bouncing back from an injury, Stevens, 33, has committed to Stoke City for an additional year in order to be a key player in a sprint finish to safety. It’s hoped that Stevens can stay healthy enough to play a bigger role in the upcoming campaign. He also brings experience from winning promotions at Sheffield United and Portsmouth. In a lengthy interview with the Sentinel during the offseason, Schumacher stated, “I thought Enda was outstanding in the last eight games.”
Up until then, he hadn’t been able to play since we arrived. He occasionally trained with the team for a few weeks, but he was never fit enough. He sustained injuries during his recuperation, and he didn’t play in a reserve match until right before the Hull match.
He participated in a private under-21 match during the international break. I watched the forty-five minutes or so that he performed, and it was evident how good he is. Although I’ve seen it in training, it’s different to witness it in a competitive setting. Then, we decided to start him in the Hull game, which was a difficult choice because he was facing Jaden Philogene, undoubtedly one of the best wingers in the division. Although we’d experienced a few injury problems as well, it was risky to insert him. However, his performance in that game had everyone saying, “Wow, what a great football player he is.”And that gives us confidence if you can accomplish that in under 45 minutes. The Easter Monday game would have been too fast for him to play in. However, he was exceptional and superb when called to play after that. His calm demeanor in the dressing room, together with his experience and quality. He was eager to stay when I told him, “We want to offer you a new contract,” because he could tell we were making an effort to create something positive. “He is a huge help,” the speaker said. “He also gave me some advice about what the dressing room kind of needs and the personalities that we need to try to bring in.
