The legendary figure in Texas football, Mike Cotten, has passed away.

Cotten, a member of the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor, was a standout quarterback in the Southwest Conference and played a key role in Darrell Royal’s renowned Flip-Flop offense.

Texas Football icon Mike Cotten, a beloved member of the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor, has passed away at the age of 84 after a brief illness. Born on December 12, 1939, in Uvalde, Texas, and hailing from Austin, Cotten was a revered figure in Longhorn history. As a two-year starting quarterback from 1959 to 1961, he earned All-Southwest Conference honors and played a pivotal role in executing Darrell Royal’s renowned Flip-Flop offense.

Cotten’s journey with football began at Austin High School, where he led the Maroons to the state semifinals before embarking on his illustrious career at the University of Texas. His freshman year saw him guide the freshman team to an undefeated season, a remarkable achievement. Transitioning to the varsity squad in 1959, Cotten shared quarterback duties and showcased his versatility by also playing defensive back. The team’s success was evident as they clinched the SWC title and secured a top-four national ranking.

Taking the reins as the starting quarterback in his junior year, Cotten continued to demonstrate his leadership and talent on the field. Despite challenges, including a loss in the Cotton Bowl, his passion for the game remained unwavering. In his senior year, he was elected co-captain and played a pivotal role in Royal’s offensive strategy, contributing to the team’s remarkable achievements. Notably, his outstanding performance in the 1962 Cotton Bowl earned him recognition as the game’s Outstanding Player.

Beyond his athletic prowess, Cotten pursued his academic interests, majoring in government at UT. Following graduation, he pursued a career in law, attending UT Law School and later serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Cotten’s contributions extended beyond the football field, as he became a respected member of the legal community and was involved in various initiatives, including the Stadium Veterans Committee.

Cotten leaves behind a lasting legacy, survived by his daughters Ashley Putman and Lesley Childress. His impact on Texas Football and the broader community will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
