Pompey are now accompanied by two of their Championship counterparts in pursuing the signing of a former Premier League winger.
Pompey faces increased competition in their pursuit of Oxford United’s Josh Murphy, with Championship clubs Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers now entering the fray. Formerly valued at £11 million, Murphy, a seasoned attacker with experience at Cardiff City and Norwich City, has garnered interest from various teams.
Alongside Pompey and Derby County, Southampton, West Brom, QPR, Sunderland, and Hull City are among those keen on securing his signature, with MLS side Minnesota United also expressing interest.
Despite the widespread interest, Murphy’s future at Oxford remains uncertain. Having played a pivotal role in their recent League One playoff final victory with a brace, Murphy’s contract expires this summer. However, he has expressed contentment with his current situation and hinted at a potential extension, citing a positive relationship with manager Des Buckingham.
While clubs are vying for his services, Murphy’s recent comments suggest a desire to remain with Oxford, emphasizing his satisfaction with the team’s direction under Buckingham’s guidance. Despite the allure of Championship football, Murphy’s commitment to Oxford and optimism for the upcoming season signal a potential resolution that sees him staying put at the Kassam Stadium.
