A skilled defenseman found himself ejected from a group-stage game following an incident that occurred during Saturday’s matchup.
In the clash between Canada and Finland in Group A of the IIHF World Championship, Canadian defenseman Bowen Byram received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for slashing Finland forward Jesse Puljujarvi. The altercation took place in the latter part of the second period, as Byram and Puljujarvi were engaged in a battle in front of the Team Canada goal. Byram’s action of striking Puljujarvi between the legs sparked a brief skirmish, with Puljujarvi also receiving a two-minute minor for roughing. The ensuing 4-on-4 play saw Owen Power score, tying the game at three. Finland failed to capitalize on the remaining power play time before the period’s end.

Byram had been showcasing a solid performance for Canada throughout the tournament. Making his debut on the senior national team’s international stage, the Buffalo Sabres defenseman tallied a goal and four points in five games, with a +5 plus/minus rating.
It remains uncertain whether Byram will face further disciplinary action for his actions. Canada swiftly moves on to a significant showdown against Switzerland on Sunday. Currently, Canada sits third in Group A, trailing Czechia by one point for second place and Switzerland by three points for the lead.
Byram’s participation in the world championship follows a commendable NHL season, which marked his first relocation. The Cranbrook, British Columbia native was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Sabres in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt. Byram recorded a career-best 29 points in 73 games during the 2023-24 campaign.
