Young Newcastle United star nominated for Premier League 2 award

SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND - MARCH 18: during the Premier League 2 match between Sunderland and Newcastle United at The Academy of Light on March 18, 2024 in Sunderland, England.

Newcastle United made just one signing during the January 2024 transfer window, securing the services of Alfie Harrison, an 18-year-old midfielder. While the transfer fee remains undisclosed, Harrison’s decision to join St James’ Park was influenced by the belief that he could see quicker opportunities for first-team action compared to his previous club, Manchester City.

Despite his young age, Harrison has emerged as a highly promising talent, showcasing his skills for the Newcastle United under 21s. His impressive performances have earned him a nomination for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for April 2024, signaling his growing influence within the club.

As the summer approaches, speculation surrounds Harrison’s next steps in his career. There is a possibility that he could be sent out on loan to gain valuable experience and regular playing time, or he may even earn a spot in the Newcastle United first-team squad. The upcoming months will reveal the trajectory of his development and his role within the club.

‘Newcastle United midfielder Alfie Harrison has been shortlisted for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for April.

The promising 18-year-old, who joined the Magpies from Manchester City in February 2024, enjoyed a fine month after starting all five of United’s Premier League 2 fixtures, producing three assists in the process.

The Bradford-born youngster’s bright displays have earned him a place on the eight-man shortlist, chosen by the Premier League Football Development panel after club coaches nominated the best performances by opposing players in each league fixture, for the award.

Harrison will be aiming to continue his bright form at under-21 level when Newcastle’s second-string face an away trip to Ashington in the Northumberland Senior Cup semi-finals on Thursday evening (kick-off 7.30pm BST), with the winner of the tie facing Blyth Town in the final, which is to be staged at St. James’ Park.

Nominated alongside Harrison are Adrian Akande of Reading, Nottingham Forest duo Aaron Bott and Jack Thompson, Amario Cozier-Duberry of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur pair Rio Kyerematen and Will Lankshear as well as Dujuan Richards of Chelsea.

The winner, also chosen by the Premier League Football Development panel, will be announced next week.’
