Kevin Phillips, former Sunderland striker, has accused Hartlepool of retracting their offer of a new contract after he was sacked as manager of the National League club over the weekend, according to the PA News agency.
Hartlepool stated in a release on Saturday that Phillips, who took charge in January, had a contract until the season’s end, and it had “expired.” However, a statement from Phillips’ representatives on Monday contended that he had been presented with a new two-year contract after meeting the agreed-upon milestones. The statement further noted that “Last week… Kevin was surprised to find out that the contract option had been revoked, leading to his immediate dismissal as head coach.”
Hartlepool won seven games from 16 during Phillips’ tenure but missed out on a place in the play-offs by 11 points. He was immediately replaced by former Woking boss Darren Sarll.
Phillips said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Hartlepool United and with all the existing staff there. “I had wished to continue the journey with everyone and build a successful team together.”
Hartlepool were not immediately available for comment when contacted by PA news agency.
