The Prime Minister expressed his desire for a “Wembley trip” at the football season’s end to support his cherished Southampton in the playoffs.
During a visit to a DHL distribution center at the London Gateway port in Essex, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a self-professed devoted Southampton fan, shared his optimism about the team’s Championship promotion prospects. Engaging with an employee who inquired about Southampton’s chances, Sunak quipped about being surrounded by confectionery in the warehouse, jesting that he had “seen enough Snickers bars for a while.” Despite Southampton’s recent form not being stellar, Sunak expressed contentment with the prospect of reaching the playoffs, stating that a playoff final at Wembley would be a fantastic outcome.
Sporting a yellow hi-vis jacket, the Prime Minister toured the vast warehouse alongside a young DHL apprentice. During a break in the canteen, Sunak engaged with the company’s employees, inquiring about the pool champion and even engaging in a friendly basketball match. Reflecting on the abundance of chocolate in the warehouse, Sunak humorously pondered whether being surrounded by it all day would increase or decrease one’s desire for it, eventually concluding that he had possibly had his fill of Snickers bars.
Amidst the tour, Sunak marveled at the level of automation and investment in the facility, likening its size to that of five St Mary’s Stadiums, the home ground of Southampton FC. Despite the distractions, Sunak’s enthusiasm for his beloved team and the prospect of a playoff final trip to Wembley remained undiminished.
