Carlton Palmer, a former England international and current pundit, thinks Sunderland will exercise their option to acquire Callum Styles this summer because of his versatility, which makes him a desirable addition.
Palmer stated to Football League World: “After their stellar season under Tony Mowbray last year, Sunderland is in a disappointing 13th place in the league with just 56 points, but they have only lost twice in their last six games, winning two and drawing the other two. Still, they are not far from the play-offs, which is disappointing.
Callum Styles is one of the guys who has made an impression on the football team. Styles has been quite consistent in his performances while playing a variety of positions while on loan from Barnsley.
“Sunderland has a provision they can activate in order to finalize the agreement. Styles has publicly stated that he is unsure of his future, which is understandable given that he was hoping to join a team that will push for advancement.
“We’ll wait and see what happens at the end of the season, as Sunderland has the ability to trigger a clause to make the deal permanent.”
Palmer does, however, think that Sunderland should sign the Hungary international permanently, and he has noticed one potential problem that might make any deal less likely.
The former England midfielder stated: “I would think that Sunderland will activate the option in his loan deal to make it permanent given his performances, which have been good, and they’ve agreed the fee and everything, but obviously they don’t have a manager at the moment, so I’m sure they will wait for the new manager to be appointed so he can decide.”
“At the moment, that is the obstacle.”
Sunderland ought to sign Callum Styles in the long run.
In light of Callum Styles’ age, adaptability, and Championship-level experience, Sunderland would be foolish to turn down the opportunity to sign him permanently.
Sunderland could assist Styles in developing at just 24 years old before selling him for a higher price, which would fit nicely with the team’s recruitment philosophy.
One of his advantages as a ready-made Championship player is that, unlike other of Sunderland’s recent additions, he wouldn’t require any time to adjust to the level of the Championship.
Sunderland will benefit greatly from his ability to play a variety of positions, especially if many players are sidelined by injury or suspensions.
He has played on the international scene and has 20 caps for Hungary. Considering how many young players they have on their roster, this kind of expertise might be really beneficial.
Whatever their management circumstances, it would seem sense for Sunderland to permanently sign Styles this summer.
