A BBC Sportscene pundit heavily criticized Cyriel Dessers during a live broadcast following his actions against Hearts.

Callum Davidson criticized Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers for being “too nice” and failing to go for goal during the win over Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final. Dessers scored both of Rangers’ goals in the 2-0 victory at Hampden Park on Sunday (April 21)), but passed up the chance for a hat-trick by attempting to set up Fabio Silva instead of shooting when in on goal.

Speaking on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene (21 April, 26m 40s), former Scotland defender Davidson said, “A top striker there, 2-0 up, you don’t pass it. For me, he’s been too nice; he has to score a hat-trick there.”

Despite the criticism, Dessers deserves credit for being Rangers’ matchwinner against Hearts, especially given his previous criticism and inconsistent performances this season. He took both chances well at Hampden, showcasing why he’s Philippe Clement’s go-to man up top.

While Dessers probably should have gone for the goal himself, he likely didn’t expect Silva to miss from close range. Had Silva scored, Dessers would have been praised for both scoring and creating goals.

Despite the missed opportunity, Dessers can take satisfaction in his double, which hopefully boosts his confidence going forward.
