Kalvin Phillips could make ‘sensational’ return to Leeds United, source confirms

According to GiveMeSport, Kalvin Phillips might make a “sensational” comeback to Leeds United this summer.

In July 2022, the England midfielder signed a reported £45 million contract to join Manchester City, leaving Elland Road (Sky Sports).
After failing to persuade Pep Guardiola that he could be a consistent starter at the Etihad Stadium, Phillips left on loan in January to join West Ham.

However, the 28-year-old’s long-term future is still unknown after a run of lackluster displays at the London Stadium.

According to individuals contacted by  GiveMeSport, Phillips may be making a “sensational” comeback to Elland Road.

This season, the Whites hope to return to the Premier League, hence the midfielder’s former club could take an interest in him ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Is Kalvin Phillips going to be back at Leeds United?

Daniel Farke’s interest in Phillips is improbable, and Leeds might not be able to pay him given the availability of Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara, Ilia Gruev, and Archie Gray.

A newly promoted Leeds squad would find it difficult to progress further if they were to bring in the midfielder, who is reportedly paid £130,000 per week, especially considering that Man City would likely demand a larger transfer fee.

Having only made 31 appearances for the Premier League winners since July 2022—and most recently, been left out of the England squad—it has been heartbreaking to watch Phillips’ career take a plunge.

The idea behind going on loan to West Ham was to get crucial playing time on the pitch ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany, which kicks off in June, but the 28-year-old has only taken a step backwards at the London Stadium.

He has been under fire for his performances, which included multiple errors and his dismissal from the 2-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, February 17.

Even if supporters could find it appealing to see their former star or at least the player who left the team in 2022 again at Elland Road, it doesn’t seem like a realistic scenario if Leeds are to win promotion from the Championship this year.
