In 2019, Barton was selected by the Seahawks in the third round. During his rookie contract, he was given little opportunities to make an impact, as he only started five games in his first three seasons. But Barton burst into the scene in Seattle during a contract year. Barton recorded 136 total tackles in eleven starts, along with two sacks and two interceptions.

Due to his efforts, Barton was awarded a $3.5 million, one-year contract by the Commanders. He would start 13 games with Washington, surpassing the 100-tackle threshold with 121 in total. According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), he doesn’t grade out exceptionally well, but he does well in coverage and is still a dependable starter.

According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS, Barton’s deal with the Broncos is likewise set to last one year and cost $3.5 million.

After the team added Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu to start alongside Jamin Davis on the Commanders defense, a Barton re-signing was no longer essential in Washington. Cody will probably replace Josey Jewell in Denver after Jewell struck a deal with the Panthers on Tuesday.

Barton completes the linebacker swap by going to Denver, Jewell to Carolina, and Luvu to Washington. He is expected to strengthen the center of the Broncos defense alongside Alex Singleton, who finished 2023 third in the NFL with 177 total tackles.
