With the second overall pick in the forthcoming draft, the Washington Commanders are projected to select a quarterback. The overwhelming favorite to be chosen by the recently purchased, historic team is Jayden Daniels, but other contenders to be the first draft choice of the Josh Harris era include Drake Maye and possibly even JJ McCarthy.
What Are The Washington Commanders’ Prospects At Quarterback?
This raises the question of what will happen to Sam Howell, the current starter, who had a good year overall and occasionally gave life to an otherwise boring Washington team, even though he threw as many touchdowns as interceptions in a first year starting that was similar to Jameis Winston’s 21-21 campaign.
It appears we have an answer now. According to Adam Schefter, Washington has traded Sam Howell to the NFC West, rather than keeping him on the sidelines as a backup and bridge starter for the Commanders’ new quarterback.
Sam Howell Is Still A Good Choice For A Quarterback
Sam Howell is still regarded by some as a starting quarterback who needs one more season to mature into an NFL passer who may be very good. It’s possible to argue that the Commanders would have given Howell more time and started him in the offense of new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury if they had selected in the fifth or sixth round (or even lower).
While Geno Smith, the current starter, has had an uneventful second season in Seattle following his signing of a three-year extension last offseason, the Seattle Seahawks gain an upgrade at backup quarterback in Drew Lock, who signed with the New York Giants.
Perhaps, come the end of the year, or even earlier, this Seahawks team could be Howell’s.
