An ex-Sunderland youth team member defeats Chelsea to win the Carabao Cup with Liverpool

James McConnell has won the Carabao Cup with Liverpool.

James McConnell, a former member of Sunderland’s youth team, defeated Chelsea with Liverpool to win the Carabao Cup.

One of several prominent and talented youth players to leave the Stadium of Light under Madrox’s ownership after the team was demoted to League One, McConnell joined Liverpool at the under-15 level from Sunderland.

Shortly after turning 17, the 19-year-old midfielder from Morpeth signed a professional contract with the team. In October 2022, he agreed to another long-term contract, which allowed him to stay longer. Earlier in the season, McConnell made his Liverpool debut against Norwich City in the FA Cup and contributed by setting up Curtis Jones.

In February, McConnell was added to Liverpool’s roster as extra time was approaching for the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley. He had been benched for the match up to that point.

In extra time, Virgil van Dijk, a defender from Holland, scored the game’s winning goal for Jurgen Klopp’s team, guaranteeing that McConnell would receive a winners medal in the Carabao Cup on his debut.

This season, McConnell has made three appearances for Klopp in the Premier League, one each in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and three appearances in Europe. With the Merseyside team still vying for a Premier League title with Manchester City and Arsenal, Reds manager Klopp has declared that he will depart Anfield at the end of the current campaign.

Along with remaining in the FA Cup and Europe League, Klopp is aiming to win three trophies with Liverpool before the conclusion of the season.
