The Falcons’ offseason will be hugely determined by what they do at the quarterback position.
After Arthur Smith’s third season in Atlanta, his decision to roll with a third-round pick ultimately cost him his job. Raheem Morris, on the other hand, won’t be spared either because he comes into a far better scenario than his predecessor. As so many others have said, the Falcons have a great but underachieving squad, so it’s only logical that some think they’re just one “quarterback away” from contending.
It remains to be seen if that is accurate, but most people concur that the Falcons’ season would have ended in the postseason if their quarterback had been even somewhat above average last season. They might meet a similar end, depending on whatever signal caller is obtained. The options aren’t quite as robust as fans thought about a month before the season ended, but there are still more than a handful of worthwhile avenues to explore. None have been mentioned as much as a Justin Fields trade, though.
In an article for ESPN, pundits were questioned about their offseason goals, which included trades, free agency signings, and draft selections. Both Mike Tannenbaum and Mike Clay expressed their desire to have the Falcons trade for Fields.
Clay
“The Bears trade QB Justin Fields to the Falcons. Entering the offseason, two things needed to happen in order for Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts to reach their potential: (1) Atlanta needed a more pass-friendly offense, and (2) Atlanta needed a QB upgrade. The first one is complete with Arthur Smith out and Zac Robinson in as the team’s playcaller. The second one will be trickier, but a trade for Fields would go a long way”.
Tannenbaum
“The Bears trade QB Justin Fields to the Falcons. Atlanta needs to go get Fields for a second-round pick. Such a move would send the 2021 first-rounder to his native Georgia and help stabilize the quarterback situation there for new coach Raheem Morris. Fields, with an abundance of young talent around him on offense, could push the Falcons into the playoffs”.
It will continue to be a talking point until the Falcons sign a quarterback. First off, the media finds it simple to market a dynamic athlete like Justin Fields partnered with Drake London, Bijan Robinson, and Kyle Pitts because of their entertainment value. Second, the fact that he is a native of Georgia advances the story even more. The Falcons hiring Raheem Morris after passing on him three years ago, doing the same with Justin Fields is another intriguing storyline.
