Following his impressive performance and fourth goal for Sunderland, Pierre Ekwah has acknowledged the recent attention surrounding his future. The French midfielder showcased his talent by securing his second goal in three games during Sunderland’s 3-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle. Ekwah’s resurgence in form coincides with Michael Beale granting him more freedom in midfield, a tactical adjustment that has evidently paid off. Since joining Sunderland in January 2023, Ekwah initially made a significant impact before being hampered by injury, but he now seems to be regaining his top form. Playing alongside Dan Neil, he has become a consistent presence in the team’s midfield.

Despite his recent success, Ekwah’s performances have attracted interest from other clubs. In the summer transfer window, there were rumors of potential suitors, but a move never materialized. However, the interest resurfaced in the January transfer window, with Crystal Palace, Fulham, and Nottingham Forest reportedly expressing interest in acquiring his services. Despite the speculation, Sunderland managed to retain Ekwah’s services, but the possibility of a Premier League move looms if the club fails to secure promotion this season.

Despite the allure of potential transfers, Ekwah has emphasized his contentment at Sunderland. He views the Stadium of Light as the perfect environment for his development as a young player and has expressed his satisfaction with his current situation.

When asked whether Wearside is the best place for him, Ekwah told the Sunderland Echo: “Oh yeah, 100 per cent. Like I said the last time we spoke, I’m definitely happy here. For my development as a person and as a footballer it’s the perfect place. I’m really enjoying myself and you can see it out there that a lot of people are enjoying themselves, that’s for sure.”

Ekwah then went onto speak about Michael Beale and how he had pushed him further forward up the pitch.

“We were talking about my past and all this, about where I’ve been and things like that,” he said.

“When the new gaffer came in he introduced himself and at the same time we introduced ourselves to him. Knowing the background of everyone I think is great and he’s done a great gesture and I appreciate that.”

Can we get the best out of Pierre Ekwah?

Pierre Ekwah’s journey at Sunderland has been marked by ups and downs, with his recent resurgence highlighting his importance to the team. Despite experiencing setbacks, particularly due to injury earlier in the season, Ekwah’s talent and contribution to the club were evident before his sidelining.

Recently, under the guidance of Michael Beale, Ekwah’s performance has notably improved, indicating that he thrives when given more freedom in midfield rather than being constrained to a defensive role.

The partnership between Ekwah and Dan Neil has been instrumental in the team’s success, demonstrating their ability to drive the team forward and create scoring opportunities.

Their combined efforts have addressed previous struggles in midfield, providing Sunderland with a much-needed boost. At just 22 years old, Ekwah possesses significant potential for further development, making him a valuable asset to the club’s future ambitions.

While there may be interest from other clubs, losing Ekwah would be a significant blow to Sunderland’s aspirations. His departure, particularly in the upcoming summer transfer window, would hinder the team’s progress, as his presence contributes significantly to their development.

Despite the allure of a move to the top flight, it is believed that Ekwah’s development would benefit from further time at Sunderland before considering a jump to a higher league level.
