In the initial round of pre-2024 NFL Draft mock drafts, NFL Network analysts Daniel Jeremiah, Bucky Brooks, and Lance Zierlein each made distinct choices for the Philadelphia Eagles’ first-round pick at No. 22 overall. Jeremiah opted for Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton, a predictable choice aligning with General Manager Howie Roseman’s tendency to build through the trenches. This move could position Guyton as a potential successor to second-team All-Pro Lane Johnson at right tackle. Johnson, who believes he has “a few good years left,” is also an Oklahoma alum.
On the other hand, Brooks selected Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins, addressing the Eagles’ struggling secondary. Wiggins, a solid option, might start in the slot and potentially replace 33-year-old cornerback Darius Slay. This choice marks a departure from the Eagles’ history, as they haven’t drafted a cornerback in the first round since Lito Sheppard in 2002.
Zierlein’s choice was Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry, emphasizing the Eagles’ secondary concerns. With the possibility of trading back or choosing the best available player at No. 22, McKinstry, with ample starting experience, presents a compelling option. He took over as the Crimson Tide’s starter as a true freshman after Patrick Surtain II’s departure for the NFL Draft.
The consensus among NFL Network analysts for the Eagles’ first-round pick suggests a focus on offensive line or cornerback, representing opposite ends of the team’s drafting spectrum. While an offensive lineman selection might lack excitement for fans, it often serves as a stabilizing investment in the offense and the protection of a franchise quarterback. Given the defensive struggles in the previous season, new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio might benefit from a young, ready-to-play cornerback to bolster the secondary within a player-friendly zone scheme.
The 2024 NFL Draft is scheduled to commence on April 25 in Detroit.
