General Motors Eyes Ferrari Engine Supply and Colton Herta for 2026 F1 Entry
In a significant development, General Motors (GM) is reportedly exploring a Ferrari engine supply deal for its 2026 Formula 1 (F1) entry. According to Mario Andretti, a Director of the GM/Cadillac F1 project, Ferrari is the preferred engine supplier, and negotiations are underway. This move would enable GM to hit the ground running in 2026, leveraging Ferrari’s expertise and experience in F1.
The partnership with Ferrari would be a strategic move for GM, allowing the American automaker to establish a strong foothold in F1. Ferrari, with its rich history and technical prowess, would provide GM with a reliable and competitive engine supply. This collaboration would also enable GM to tap into Ferrari’s vast knowledge and expertise in F1, accelerating its own development and competitiveness.
In addition to the Ferrari engine supply deal, GM is also eyeing American driver Colton Herta for its 2026 F1 lineup. Herta, who has been racing for Andretti’s IndyCar squad since 2020, has been impressive in his performances, securing two race victories and six podiums in the 2024 season. Although Herta’s F1 aspirations were previously thwarted due to a lack of FIA Super License points, GM’s interest in the young American driver could provide him with a second chance to break into the F1 scene.
Andretti, who has a long-standing relationship with Ferrari, having raced for the Scuderia in F1 in 1971, ’72, and ’82, believes that the partnership with Ferrari would be a “best of all worlds” scenario. With Ferrari’s engine supply and Herta’s driving talents, GM would be well-positioned to make a competitive debut in F1 in 2026.
The GM/Cadillac F1 project has been gaining momentum, with the team expected to make its debut in 2026. With the Ferrari engine supply deal and Herta’s potential involvement, GM is poised to make a significant impact in the F1 paddock.
