Sunderland are set to host West Brom at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening in a much-anticipated Championship clash. As both teams aim to secure vital points, West Brom head coach Carlos Corberan has revealed that the club is awaiting scan results on Grady Diangana before deciding on his availability for the match. The scan, scheduled for Monday, will determine whether the winger can join the squad for the trip to Wearside.
The Black Cats approach the fixture eager to break a streak of four consecutive draws and return to winning form. Meanwhile, West Brom also head into the game after a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Norwich City at the weekend. If the Baggies hope to clinch all three points, they may need to do so without Diangana, who has been struggling with various fitness concerns. The 26-year-old missed Saturday’s match against Norwich, and Corberan explained the situation post-game:
“In recent weeks, Grady has had some minor issues—not injuries but small problems. He has experienced discomfort in his ankle, Achilles, and now his calf. On Friday, his calf tightened up during training. Given the intensity of the upcoming schedule, we decided not to risk him, especially since he couldn’t train. The calf issue needs further evaluation, so we’ve scheduled a scan for Monday. Depending on the results, we’ll decide if he can train with the group and be involved on Tuesday.”
Diangana, who has made 12 Championship appearances this season without registering a goal or assist, could join long-term absentees Semi Ajayi, Daryl Dike, and Paddy McNair on the sidelines. Another player facing uncertainty is defender Kyle Bartley. Corberan commented on Bartley’s situation, stating:
“The initial target was for him to be ready by next weekend. I was pleased with his progress today. If he successfully completes training on Sunday and Monday with the group, he might be available on Tuesday. However, we’ll need to monitor his reaction, as the original plan was to prepare him for the weekend.”
As both teams contend with challenges, the midweek encounter promises to test the depth and resilience of their squads.
