“Joe Sacco Earns First Win as Bruins Interim Head Coach in 1-0 Victory Over Utah Hockey Club”
The Boston Bruins secured their first win since November 12 with a 1-0 victory over the Utah Hockey Club on Thursday, marking Joe Sacco’s first win as the team’s interim head coach.
Sacco, a Medford native and former Bruins assistant coach, took over the reins after Jim Montgomery’s firing earlier this week. The 55-year-old coach was thrilled to earn his first win, stating, “It felt good. To get our guys to get a win, too, was even more important — to feel better about themselves.”
The Bruins dominated the matchup, controlling the pace and limiting Utah to just two high-danger scoring chances at 5-on-5 play. Joonas Korpisalo made 21 saves to secure the shutout, while Elias Lindholm scored the lone goal on the power play, his first since October 12.
Sacco praised his team’s effort, saying, “I thought we had a couple of individuals that really brought some energy to our group tonight, to lift the bench at certain moments during the game. And just a good effort all around from our guys. They really dug in.”
The win marked a positive step for the underachieving Bruins, who aim to regain momentum under Sacco’s leadership. As Brad Marchand noted, “It’s great for Joe to get his first win as a coach and this team. And very happy for him. He’s an incredible coach, a great guy.”
Sacco acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “We have plenty of work to do moving forward.” However, he cherished the moment, saying, “The locker room had a good vibe. It was alive.”
