Will the Packers Snag Another Giants Star in 2025? A Game-Changing Free Agency Move Looms!

The Green Bay Packers entered the 2024 NFL season with a splash, making two unexpected yet impactful free-agent signings. While it’s not unusual for General Manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers’ front office to dabble in free agency, securing high-profile players from the open market is a rarity. However, this offseason saw a departure from tradition as the Packers brought in not one but two marquee names.

The first major acquisition was running back Josh Jacobs, previously with the Las Vegas Raiders. Jacobs has exceeded all expectations, becoming a cornerstone of Green Bay’s offense. Currently ranked third in the NFL with 838 rushing yards, he trails only Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens and Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles. Jacobs’ dominance on the ground has propelled the Packers’ rushing attack to fourth in the league, averaging an impressive 149.9 yards per game. His influence has been instrumental in revitalizing Green Bay’s run game, adding a dynamic edge to their offense.

The second significant signing was safety Xavier McKinney, formerly of the New York Giants. Regarded as the top safety in free agency, McKinney was a strategic addition to strengthen the Packers’ secondary, particularly alongside rookies Javon Bullard and Evan Williams. McKinney arrived in Green Bay with a solid reputation, having recorded nine interceptions in 49 games during his four seasons with the Giants. His second NFL season was particularly notable, as he tallied five interceptions. This momentum carried into his tenure with the Packers, as he notched five picks in his first five games.

Through 10 games this season, McKinney has already set a career high with six interceptions. Although opposing quarterbacks have become more cautious about throwing in his direction, McKinney’s impact remains profound. He has yet to allow a single touchdown when targeted, a stark contrast to years of inconsistent safety play in Green Bay. Opposing quarterbacks are completing just 57.1% of their passes against him, with a meager quarterback rating of 49.2. McKinney’s arrival has transformed the Packers’ defense, offering a reliable presence in the secondary and significantly reducing big plays allowed.
