Armstrong, despite his recent struggles, still holds a place in Southampton’s recent history, having netted 24 goals in the Championship to help secure promotion.
However, his Premier League tally remains underwhelming, with only five goals to his name. The fans are patient, but it’s clear Armstrong is yet to replicate his lower-league success in the top division.
Looking back, Southampton has had strikers who flourished in the Premier League, like Graziano Pelle, who scored 23 goals, and Rickie Lambert, who netted 28 top-flight goals. These players set a high standard for any current forward hoping to make their mark.
One striker who left Southampton in 2021 was Danny Ings, who had been a key figure for the club. The £25m sale to Aston Villa felt bittersweet, but his subsequent struggles at Villa and West Ham have since softened the blow.
Ings has struggled to replicate his Saints form, with his value now plummeting to just £7m, far from the £25m Southampton earned. His decline at Villa and West Ham shows that his best days may be behind him, leaving Southampton not regretting their decision to cash in when they did.
Despite this, the focus now turns to the current strikers at Southampton, who are failing to deliver the goals needed to help the team avoid relegation.
