Opinion: Paul Mitchell should sell Newcastle’s in-demand star in January – Howe must be feeling the frustration

Newcastle United have found plenty to be positive about since breaking their five-game winless streak in the Premier League. Their last match before the international break saw a commanding 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, which pushed them up to eighth place in the table.

Alexander Isak has been a standout performer for the Magpies, scoring in each of his last four appearances, much to the delight of Eddie Howe. In contrast, Howe may feel frustrated by Callum Wilson’s ongoing injury issues. The 32-year-old striker has yet to feature this season due to a back injury suffered in pre-season, and last season, his appearances were limited to just nine starts because of various injuries.

Newcastle are hopeful that Wilson could return for their match against West Ham United after the break. Although he attracted interest from multiple clubs last summer, he ultimately stayed at St James’ Park. With his contract expiring in 2025, January might be the club’s last good chance to recover some of the £20 million they invested in him in 2020.

The positive news is that Wilson still seems to have several suitors in the Premier League, with Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brentford, and Southampton all reportedly interested in a possible January move.
