Manchester this weekend, transforming the city into a music haven. For the first time ever, the global music event unfolded in the heart of Manchester, drawing in a star-studded lineup that included legendary acts like the Pet Shop Boys, rising stars like RAYE, and hip-hop royalty like Busta Rhymes.
The excitement was palpable as Co-op Live, the £365 million venue, hosted the red carpet rollout and the main event on Sunday, November 10th. This marked a significant moment for the venue, aiming to dispel earlier concerns and frustrations surrounding its opening earlier this year.
Rita Ora, a seasoned host for the event, returned for her third time, leading the spectacular show. The set design drew inspiration from Manchester’s rich musical heritage and its legacy of warehouse parties, even featuring a special balcony dubbed “Rita’s Bar” where she interviewed stars throughout the evening, including the iconic Happy Mondays duo Shaun and Bez.
The night offered something for everyone, with showstopping performances that ranged from levitating pianos and acrobatic feats during Benson Boone’s set to RAYE’s dazzling presentation backed by a 30-strong choir and a 13-piece live band. Busta Rhymes brought the house down with his classic hip-hop hits, leaving audiences both in the venue and at home thoroughly entertained.
While Liam Gallagher, the Best Rock winner, was absent, the night wasn’t short on other captivating performances. From Tyla to K-Pop sensations LE SSERAFIM, Peso Pluma, and Shawn Mendes, the stage was abuzz with international talent. The evening culminated in a moving tribute to Liam Payne, the former One Direction member who recently passed away. Rita Ora, visibly emotional, spoke of Payne’s kindness and the positive impact he left on everyone he met.
Closing the show, the Pet Shop Boys, the inaugural 2024 MTV EMA Pop Pioneer recipients, took the stage in a highly anticipated performance. Joined by the Manchester Camerata, they delivered a captivating rendition of David Bowie’s “All the Young Dudes” followed by their iconic hit “West End Girls,” celebrating its 40th anniversary.
This year’s MTV EMAs not only celebrated global musical talent but also recognized a diverse range of artists across various categories.
