Drake Maye wasn’t the only one on the Patriots to slip up with a rookie mistake during their game in Nashville. With the team trailing 20-17 in overtime, Maye attempted a risky deep pass into double coverage. Aiming for Kayshon Boutte, the ball came up short and was intercepted by Titans safety Amani Hooker, sealing the game. Reflecting on the play, Maye expressed his frustration, admitting, “I see the safety, I think we’re throwing into the wind, I’ve got to put some more on it. Just a dumb decision. Something you’d like to have back, especially in that situation.” But a critical question lingered—why was Maye throwing into the wind at such a pivotal moment?
The Titans had won the coin toss in overtime and elected to receive, leaving the Patriots with the choice of which direction to kick. In a puzzling move, the Patriots opted to kick into the wind, which meant that when Maye and the offense took the field, they, too, were facing it. On a Monday morning conference call, Jerod Mayo sounded less like an experienced coach and more like a rookie himself as he attempted to explain the rationale behind the decision. “The wind at the time, I would say the wind had changed. The wind had changed from the beginning of the game to the end of the game,” Mayo said, attributing the oversight to shifting weather conditions.
It appeared that Mayo and his captains had not adequately prepared for the wind’s impact in overtime. Whether Mayo failed to notice the shift in wind direction or neglected to communicate it with the team, the misstep fell on the coaching staff. The decision seemed to follow New England’s pre-game plan without taking into account the changing conditions. The significance of the wind was evident, with the flags on the goalposts visibly blowing and Maye’s intercepted pass hanging in the air. Adding to the oversight, former Patriot Nick Folk, now kicking for the Titans, launched a touchback out of the back of the end zone with the wind at his back during overtime.
This oversight from the Patriots’ coaching staff came across as an unforced error, one that may have directly influenced the game’s outcome.
