Sunderland Women are set to face Bristol City at Eppleton this Sunday, and head coach Mel Reay has been addressing the squad’s injury challenges while celebrating an unexpected addition to the team. This week, Sunderland re-signed veteran defender Grace McCatty, who recently came out of retirement to provide much-needed depth in defense. McCatty’s return comes at a crucial time, as the team is currently without captain Bri Westrup until January, while further injuries to defenders Jessica Brown and Louise Griffiths have tested the squad’s resources. Brown is expected to return soon, but Griffiths is anticipated to be sidelined for a more extended period.
Reay shared insights into her decision, explaining that the defensive unit’s injuries made McCatty’s comeback essential. “I think it’s no surprise that we’ve got a few injuries in our defending unit,” Reay said. “I spoke to Grace about 12 days ago and softly mentioned the possibility, and she was all for it. She’s still a true professional, keeping herself fit, so it’s just about getting her back on the ball and up to match speed now. It’s a huge addition for us, a much-needed one with the injuries we have. Grace will be straight back in the squad this weekend.” Reay also updated on her players’ progress, noting that while Brown will miss this weekend’s match, she is expected back for the Blackburn fixture. Westrup is on track with her recovery and may return after Christmas, but Griffiths’ recovery remains indefinite due to complications from an earlier knee operation. This prompted Reay to bring in McCatty for both her experience and defensive coverage.
In the face of these challenges, Reay has also relied on emerging talent within the squad. Meg Beer, the only semi-professional player in the team, was brought into the lineup against Durham and played a vital role in their important victory. Beer is set to start again in Sunday’s match against Bristol City, and Reay expressed full confidence in her abilities. “I was delighted. I’ve coached Meg since she was 15, so I know exactly what she’s about,” Reay said. “She’s reliable, and to come in against Durham for her first start of the season—at such a challenging venue—she was absolutely solid. She’s got that shirt now, and it’s hers to keep.”
