Leeds United have been credited with revived interest in signing Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien once his loan at LAFC comes to an end.
As we enter November, there might already be one eye on the January window for Championship managers, including Daniel Farke.
The German might not have been that fussed about drastic efforts to be made in the new year, but injuries in key positions means he might be forced into transfer action.
Lewis O’Brien has found Premier League opportunities incredibly hard to come by since he swapped 2022 playoff final losers Huddersfield Town for the winners, Nottingham Forest.
Three loans away from the City Ground since mean his future is up in the air, and TEAMtalk report that Leeds are one of several clubs monitoring his situation.
The likes of Sheffield United, Southampton, West Brom and Hull City are also cited in the report as looking to sign the 26-year-old – who will be returning to Forest after his LAFC loan concludes next month when the MLS season comes to a close.
Former Leeds midfielder Carlton Palmer believes that O’Brien would be a good signing for Leeds in the position they’re in right now: chasing promotion from the Championship.
While he’s been unable to demonstrate his credentials at Premier League level, Palmer told Football League World that the Whites could use the 26-year-old as a stop-gap before selling in the top flight:
“Certainly, with the injury problems Leeds have in that area it makes sense.
“The problem that they [Leeds] have obviously is he struggled to make any kind of impact in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest.
“But the priority is for Leeds to get back to the Premier League. Given his age, it wouldn’t be a problem for Leeds United to move him on should they get promoted to the Premier League.
“It’s going to be a chase for Lewis O’Brien’s signature, there are a lot of clubs who are interested in his signature, but I think it would be a good solution for Leeds United given the injury crisis they have at the moment.”
O’Brien is a smart way to build your squad for the PL
If Leeds are already looking at how they build their squad for hopeful promotion this season, then adding good squad players is a wise venture.
That was a massive issue in the three seasons we previously had, and someone like O’Brien would be a solid pick-up.
Hypothetically, if he’s not up to that task, proven by how he fares for the second half of this season, then as Palmer says, you can easily move him on for a decent sum.
