Understand that Tom Cannon’s £6m exit from Leicester on hold as Ipswich eye Chiedozie Ogbene move

Tom Cannon, the once-capped Ireland striker who has endured an odd club career of late, may be set for yet another move with Sheffield United leading the hunt for the suddenly out-of- favour Leicester striker.

The newly-promoted Foxes signed Jordan Ayew from Crystal Palace earlier this week and new boss Steve Cooper has tacitly assented to allow Cannon’s departure ahead of the window.

Championship rivals Luton Town have reportedly joined the race for the 21-year-old, who was left out of the Leicester squad which faced Fulham at the weekend.

Cannon penned a five-year deal eleven months ago under Enzo Maresca after finally leaving his boyhood club Everton.

After a convoluted process, long-time England prospect Cannon finally made his first senior Ireland appearance against Portugal earlier this year.

Injury and competition limited Cannon’s appearances last season but he scored three goals and two assists in his 16 games, most of which as a late substitute. He fared better at Preston, nabbing eight goals and an assist in 21 outings.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder literally played a straight bat when asked about Cannon today – namechecking legendary English opening bat Geoffrey Boycott.

Sunderland and Luton are also in the frame for Cannon who is believed to be on offer for a relatively cut-price figure of just £6m (€7m).

Stoke are also in the mix but the Yorkshire side are believed to be favourites to get a deal done this week.

“There are a few players on our radar,” said Wilder.

“I’m doing a Geoffrey Boycott again, playing with a straight bat. I don’t think a lot of the younger generation will know who that is, but I do.

“I did believe, and still do, that there’ll be a lot of business up and down the country until the deadline. Especially with clubs in the Premier League settling down their own squads and nailing the 25. So some will become available. We have to be ready, and hopefully we are.

“I’m putting my stuff to the board and to chief executive Stephen Bettis. And Steve knows what I would like to do. We’ve got two loans left and I’d love the opportunity to maximise this window.

“But I also understand that the decisions are made above me, and I respect that. We have a chance to maximise this window and I believe it’s my job to put forward the best suggestions to Steve.”

Meanwhile, Chiedozie Ogbene could become the third Irish Tractor Boy as Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna ponders a transfer window swoop for the current Luton striker.

Fermanagh native McKenna was not alone in being impressed with the Corkman’s contribution to the Hatters’ brief, but eventful stint in the top flight; indeed, his injury was a not insignificant factor in them failing to elude the drop.

Ipswich have already spent more than €100m on players this summer, including Sammie Szmodics, who scored their first top-flight goal in the chastening weekend defeat to champions Manchester City, and defender Dara O’Shea.

However, a serious hamstring injury to winger Wes Burns in the opening day loss to Liverpool may force McKenna’s hand, according to the BBC.

Ogbene scored five times in 39 appearances last season after switching from Rotherham last summer and his pace and versatility were a key asset for Luton until injury struck.

Ogbene, who has scored four times in 20 Ireland appearances, has started all three of Luton’s Championship games this season as they await their opening win.
