Breaking News: Luton Town joins race for Leicester City player

Luton Town have joined other teams in the pursuit of Leicester City forward Tom Cannon.

This is according to Alan Nixon, who believes the Hatters are just one of a number of Championship sides that have taken an interest in the Irishman.

The striker is available for a permanent move away from the King Power Stadium after seemingly being deemed surplus to requirements by the Foxes.

Despite his potential, Cannon doesn’t seem to be a part of Steve Cooper’s plans moving forward, with Jordan Ayew coming in as an alternative striker option.

However, the Irishman won’t be a cheap signing for any team looking to lure him away from the Premier League side permanently, with Cooper’s team reportedly looking for around £7m for his signature, having only signed him one year ago.

Unfortunately for him, a combination of factors meant he didn’t win as much game time last term as he would have wanted.

An injury at the start of his spell at Leicester didn’t aid his cause – and neither did the fact that others were ahead of him in the pecking order. Jamie Vardy, Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka were available as alternatives last season.

When Cannon has been able to win regular starts in the Championship, he has shone, as his spell at Preston North End during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign shows.

He will now be looking to join a club that will offer him that opportunity to develop and fulfil his potential, with his career arguably stalling at his current side.

Luton Town join Tom Cannon race

Luton already have some decent options at this point, but Nixon has reported that they have also taken an interest in Cannon.

The forward, who could cost as much as £7m to sign, could come in to compete with the likes of Elijah Adebayo and Carlton Morris for a starting spot.

However, they aren’t alone in this race, with Sheffield United and Stoke City also named as interested teams.

Stoke may have the “financial muscle” to get a deal over the line for the forward, but the Blades are also keen to win the race, and could be an attractive destination considering how strong their squad is on paper.

Sunderland are another team interested in the player, but they will need to move quickly if they want to get a deal over the line for him, something they may be able to do after the departure of Jack Clarke.

Luton Town may need to offload a striker if they recruit Tom Cannon

Joe Taylor playing for Luton

At the moment, Luton have enough options up front, with Adebayo, Morris, Joe Taylor and Cauley Woodrow just a few of the players who can operate up top for the Hatters.

If they bring Cannon in, that may push one or two of their current options down the pecking order and this is why they may benefit from offloading a forward if he joins.

Taylor is a player who would probably benefit from being loaned out, having enjoyed two successful temporary spells away from Kenilworth Road last season.

Even though he has been involved in the first team this term, he needs regular starts.

And Taylor may only get those regular starts if he secures a loan move.
